Mantra
ॐ कावेर्यै नमः
Om Kaveryai Namaha
Salutations to Mother Kaveri — and through her to every river that sustains life.
How to recite
Aadi Perukku is observed on the 18th day of the Tamil month Aadi when the rivers (especially the Kaveri) are at their fullest from the south-west monsoon. Tamil Shaiva families gather at the riverbank or a nearby water-body, offer mixed-rice naivedyam, flowers, turmeric-kumkum, and bangles to the river, and share the Pongal-style picnic prasad together. Married women tie the kaapu (sacred yellow thread) and pray for marital well-being and family prosperity.
Benefits
Aadi Perukku celebrates water as the sustainer of life and honours the rivers that have given Tamil Shaiva civilization its agriculture, its temples and its very Saiva theology (the Tirumurai hymns are filled with river-imagery). The vrat is held to grant family well-being, marital harmony, and the river-goddess blessings of fertility and abundance.
