Jagaddhatri Puja — Karthik Shukla Navami worship of Devi as Jagaddhatri, sustainer of the universe. The biggest Devi festival in Bengal AFTER Durga Puja. Krishnanagar (Nadia district) and Chandannagar (Hooghly) host massive three-day pandals; Chandannagar's Jagaddhatri visarjan procession lights the Hooghly riverbank with thousands of torches and is broadcast live across Bengal.

Mantra

जगद्धात्रि नमस्तुभ्यं सिद्धिदा कमलार्चिते। बुद्धिं देहि यशो देहि शत्रून् नाशय नाशय॥

Jagaddhatri namastubhyam siddhi-da kamalarchite | Buddhim dehi yasho dehi shatrun nashaya nashaya ||

Salutations to Jagaddhatri — granter of siddhis, worshipped by Lakshmi. Grant me intellect, grant me fame, destroy my enemies, destroy them. (The classical Jagaddhatri stotram.)

How to recite

On Karthik Shukla Navami, perform the three-fold puja (Saptami-Ashtami-Navami compressed into one day, mirroring Durga Puja but in a single day). Set up the Jagaddhatri altar with kalash, red hibiscus, and Devi murti (four-armed, riding a lion, holding chakra-shankha-bow-arrow). Recite the Jagaddhatri Stotram and the Devi Mahatmyam. Bhog of khichuri-labra-payesh-naru is offered three times through the day.

Benefits

Jagaddhatri Puja commemorates Devi's appearance as Jagaddhatri (literally 'sustainer of the world') after Mahishasura's demons grew arrogant. Worship is held to grant: jagat-rakshana (cosmic protection over family and home), siddhi in worldly affairs, and Devi's grace as the sustainer-mother. The Krishnanagar Jagaddhatri Puja (founded by Maharaja Krishnachandra Roy in 1762) is the most iconic — a 250-year unbroken tradition of three-day pandals.

✦ Special Note

Krishnanagar's Jagaddhatri Puja (since 1762) is the oldest. Chandannagar's Jagaddhatri lighting (the most elaborate illuminated pandals in Bengal, surpassing even Durga Puja) is the most photographed. Dates per the Gupta Press Panjika (guptapresspanjika.org — the standard Bengali almanac since 1869), following its Amanta (Bengali) lunar convention with months ending on Amavasya (new moon), as used for Kali worship and dark-fortnight rituals; cross-checked against astronomical tithi computation.
