Pradosham as observed in Kerala — twice monthly on Trayodashi tithi of both pakshas. Strict no-rice daytime rule (Kerala-specific). Pradosham at famous Shiva temples — Vaikom, Ettumanoor, Kaduthuruthy, Vadakkunnathan — draws large gatherings. Calendar dates are inherited from the Hindu Pradosh schedule.

Mantra

ॐ नमः शिवाय। प्रदोष-समये शिवं नमामि।

Om Namah Shivaya · Pradosha-samaye Shivam namami

Salutations to Shiva. I bow to Shiva at the Pradosha hour.

How to recite

On Trayodashi tithi (13th day of both pakshas): morning bath, visit a Shiva temple (Vaikom, Ettumanoor, Kaduthuruthy, Vadakkunnathan), observe daytime upavasa. At dusk (Pradosha kalam — 1.5 hours before sunset to 1.5 hours after), bathe again, visit the temple a second time for the Pradosha puja (Kalasha abhishekam to Shivalinga), light a lamp at home, and read holy texts (Shiva Purana, Lingashtakam) through the evening. Break the fast after sunset.

Benefits

Pradosha kalam is said to be the most auspicious time for Shiva worship — when Shiva dances on the bull Nandi between the horns. Observance grants relief from grahadosha, sin, and disease. Sani Pradosham (when Trayodashi falls on Saturday) is the most powerful — Koovalam (bilva) petals offered then are said to grant moksha.

✦ Special Note

Sani Pradosham (Trayodashi on Saturday) is most auspicious — offer Koovalam (bilva) petals to the Shivalinga. Vaikom Ashtami (Vrishchikam) is the year's most significant Pradosham-linked event.

Foods Allowed

One sattvic vegetarian meal after sunset (after the Pradosham puja)Tender coconut, fruits during the dayMilk, gheeWheat-based dishes — chapati, puttu

Foods to Avoid

Rice during the day (strict — Kerala-specific)Onion, garlicMeat, fish, eggsTamarind

Meal Idea

Long ago the gods and demons churned the cosmic ocean — the Samudra Manthan — to obtain Amrit, the nectar of immortality. They used Mount Mandara as the churning rod and the great serpent Vasuki as the rope. They churned for a thousand years. During the churning a deadly poison called Halahala emerged first — so powerful that its fumes alone began to destroy all creation. The gods and demons stopped in terror. The heavens shook. Lord Brahma himself fled. The gods ran to Lord Shiva in desperation. Without hesitation Lord Shiva stepped forward. He cupped the Halahala in his palm and swallowed it in one motion — holding it in his throat so the poison could not reach his heart nor return to the world. His throat turned deep blue from the power of the poison — earning him the name Neelakantha, the blue-throated one. Goddess Parvati pressed her hand to his throat to prevent the poison from descending further. He saved all creation at great personal cost, bearing the burn of the world's poison silently and without complaint. The gods were so overcome with gratitude that they gathered at the Pradosh Kaal — the sacred twilight hour between day and night, the time when Shiva had acted — and worshipped him with flowers, bilva leaves, milk, and the deepest devotion. Lord Shiva was immensely pleased. He declared — "Whoever worships me at this twilight time on the trayodashi tithi shall be freed from all troubles. Their sins shall be washed away. The childless shall receive children. The sick shall be healed. The poor shall find wealth. I am most easily pleased at this hour when day and night meet." This is why Pradosh Vrat is observed twice each lunar month. We worship Shiva at sunset — the hour when he swallowed the poison of the world so that we might live in peace.
