The full-moon (Purnima) of Purushottam Maas — the extra lunar month (Adhik Maas) that falls roughly every three years to align the lunar and solar calendars. In 2026 Purushottam Maas runs from 17 May to 15 June, and its Purnima falls on 31 May. Because Lord Krishna adopted this 'leftover' month as His own, Vaishnavas treat the entire month — and especially its Purnima — as a uniquely auspicious time for fasting, chanting, and charity.

Mantra

Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare / Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare

Hare Krishna Maha-mantra

O Hare! O Krishna! O Rama! — chanted with extra resolve during the sacred month of Purushottam, the month presided over by Lord Krishna Himself.

How to recite

Chant additional rounds of the maha-mantra through Purushottam Maas. On the Purnima, perform abhishek of Sri Krishna, offer a ghee lamp, give in charity (dana), and read the glories of Purushottam Maas from the Padma Purana. Break the grain-free fast after moonrise with prasadam.

Benefits

Lord Krishna personally accepted the otherwise-neglected extra (adhik) month and named it Purushottam Maas, declaring that devotional service performed in it yields multiplied spiritual benefit. Observances on its Purnima are especially dear to Him.

✦ Special Note

Per the ISKCON / Gaudiya Vaishnava Gaurabda calendar (panchang-calculated by Udaya Tithi), the Purnima tithi present at sunrise for Purushottam Adhik Jyeshtha falls on 31 May 2026 (Sunday) for Western time zones. Observe a grain-free fast until moonrise, then honour prasadam. This Adhik Maas Purnima is otherwise easy to miss because the extra month is often skipped by general calendars. There is deliberately no 2027 date — no Adhik Maas occurs in 2027; the next Purushottam Maas falls in 2029. Dates per the official vaisnavacalendar.info (VCAL Mayapur) calendar.
