Vasant Panchami — Magha Shukla Panchami — the first day of vasant ritu (spring season) and the avirbhav (appearance) day of Devi Saraswati. Yellow is the day's colour — yellow clothes, yellow flowers, yellow food. Ramanandis honour Saraswati alongside Sita-Ram, recognising her as the vani-shakti without which the Ramayana itself could not have been spoken.

Mantra

ॐ ऐं सरस्वत्यै नमः · श्री राम वाणी विद्या प्रदायिनी

Om Aim Saraswatyai Namah · Shri Ram Vani Vidya Pradayini

Salutations to Devi Saraswati — and to Sri Ram who grants the gift of speech, learning, and the mastery of the Ramcharitmanas.

How to recite

Wear yellow clothes. Place a Saraswati murti or photo beside the Ram darbar. Worship Saraswati first with yellow flowers (marigold, mustard), kesari halwa, and a saffron-rice offering. Recite the Saraswati Vandana and the Ramcharitmanas mangalacharan (which itself begins with Saraswati-vandana). Children begin school / first writing-lessons today (vidyarambha sanskara).

Benefits

Vasant Panchami — Magha Shukla Panchami — heralds the arrival of spring (vasant ritu) and is sacred to Devi Saraswati, the goddess of learning, music, and speech. For Ramanandis, this is the day to honour the Saraswati-aspect of Devi Sita — without whose vani-prasad even Sri Ram would not have spoken the immortal verses of the Ramayana. Every Ramanandi child traditionally writes their first letters today with Saraswati's blessing.

✦ Special Note

Many Ramanandi mathas conduct vidyarambha sanskara today — children's first formal lesson in reading and writing, with their slate offered first to the Ram darbar before they trace their first letters. Dates per the standard Vikram Samvat Panchang (Purnimanta system — month boundary at Purnima), Ayodhya/Varanasi convention; same underlying calendar as Hindu general, Purnimanta month naming.
