Vishu — the Malayalam astrological new year, observed on Mesha Sankranti (Sun's entry into Aries). Not a strict fast but a sacred dawn observance: the Vishukani is arranged the night before with auspicious items; family members open their eyes to it at dawn to set the prosperity of the coming year. Followed by Vishukkaineetam (gifting money) and Vishu Sadya.

Salutations to Krishna, son of Vasudeva, Hari, the Supreme Self — destroyer of the sorrows of those who bow to Him.
How to recite
On the eve of Vishu, the eldest woman of the family arranges the Vishukani — an auspicious display in the puja room of: a Vishnu/Krishna idol or Bhagavad Gita, a polished bell-metal vessel (uruli) of raw rice, a yellow Konna flower garland (Cassia fistula), golden cucumber (Vellarikka), jackfruit, mango, betel leaves, areca nut, gold coins, a mirror, a coconut, and a lit Nilavilakku (brass lamp). At dawn on Vishu, family members are led blindfolded to the puja room with eyes opened only to first behold the Vishukani — the day's first sight sets the prosperity of the coming year. Elders then give Vishukkaineetam (gifts of money in newly-released currency) to children and younger family members. Vishu Sadya is served on banana leaves at midday. Visit Guruvayur, Sabarimala, or Padmanabhaswamy temples.
Benefits
Vishu marks the Malayalam astrological new year (Mesha Sankranti — Sun's entry into Aries). The Vishukani darshan is said to set the auspiciousness of the coming year; the Konna flower (Krishna's favourite) is believed to be a direct conduit to Vishnu's grace.
