Karthika Purnima / Dev Diwali — the full moon at the close of Karthika month, the most auspicious Purnima of the year. Observed with pre-dawn Karthika snan, morning Vishnu puja, evening rows of pure ghee diyas at the tulsi-vrindavan and village mandir. Closes the high autumn worship season (Diwali → Govardhan → Devuthani → Tulsi Vivah → Karthika Purnima). Coincides with Guru Nanak Jayanti.

How to recite

Karthika Purnima (the full moon at the close of Karthika month, also called Dev Diwali — 'the Diwali of the Gods') is one of the year's most auspicious days. Bishnois observe with a pre-dawn bath in a river, tank, or pure well-water (the 'Karthika snan' tradition); morning Vishnu puja with tulsi and flowers; visit to the village mandir for collective Shabadvani recitation; and evening lighting of rows of pure ghee diyas at the tulsi-vrindavan, the threshold, and the village mandir. Many Bishnoi villages float diyas on small ponds or wells. The day also marks Sikh Guru Nanak Jayanti — Bishnois who venerate the broader sant tradition often join Sikh sangat on this day.

Benefits

Karthika Purnima is considered the most spiritually charged Purnima of the year — bathing, charity, and lamp-lighting on this day are believed to multiply punya thousand-fold. For Bishnois, it is also the closing of the Karthika sequence (Karva Chauth → Diwali → Govardhan → Bhai Dooj → Devuthani → Tulsi Vivah → Karthika Purnima) that defines the high autumn worship season. The Karthika snan and diya-lighting are practiced unbroken in Bishnoi villages since the 15th century.
