Karadaiyan Nombu in the Shaiva Siddhanta tradition — observed at the exact moment of the Tamil month transition from Maasi to Panguni, with karadai naivedyam, the Maha Mrityunjaya recitation, and the Savitri katha. Held to grant the long life of the husband and the Mrityunjaya grace of Shiva.

Mantra

ॐ त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम् । उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान्मृत्योर्मुक्षीय माऽमृतात् ॥

Om Tryambakam Yajamahe Sugandhim Pushti-vardhanam. Urvarukam-iva Bandhanan Mrityor-mukshiya Maamritat.

We worship the three-eyed Lord, fragrant and nourishing all beings — may He release us from the bondage of death, like a ripe cucumber from its vine, into immortality. (Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra)

How to recite

Karadaiyan Nombu is observed by married Tamil Shaiva women precisely at the moment the Tamil month transitions from Maasi to Panguni (the sun moves from Kumbha to Meena rashi). The karadai is prepared in advance and offered to Savitri and Shiva at the exact transit time. The nombu saradu (sacred yellow thread) is tied on the wrist after worship. In Shaiva households, the Maha Mrityunjaya is recited along with the Savitri katha — invoking Shiva, the conqueror of death, alongside Savitri who rescued her husband from Yama.

Benefits

Karadaiyan Nombu is observed for the long life and well-being of the husband and the family. In the Shaiva Siddhanta tradition, it is paired with the Maha Mrityunjaya invocation of Shiva — the prototype of all victory-over-death blessings — and is held to grant the merit of Savitri's devotion together with Shiva's Mrityunjaya grace.
