Sant Namdev Punyatithi — the mahasamadhi day of Sant Namdev Maharaj at Pandharpur on Ashadh Shukla Trayodashi (1350 CE). The first 'mahapida' samadhi step at the Vitthal Mandir entrance is Namdev's — he prayed to remain at the threshold so that every devotee's feet would touch him on the way to Vitthal. The day comes two days after Ashadhi Ekadashi when lakhs of Warkaris are still at Pandharpur.

Mantra

नामदेव की जय

Namdev ki Jaya

Victory to Sant Namdev Maharaj — the tailor-saint who fed Vitthal himself, who preached the Warkari path from Pandharpur to Punjab.

How to recite

Sing the abhangas of Sant Namdev — both the Marathi gatha and the 61 hymns preserved in the Sikh Guru Granth Sahib. Visit Pandharpur if possible — Namdev's samadhi is on the first step of the Vitthal Mandir at Pandharpur, where he prayed to be trampled by every devotee's feet. Sing 'Tirtha Vitthal Kshetra Vitthal' continuously.

Benefits

Sant Namdev Maharaj attained mahasamadhi at Pandharpur on this day (Ashadh Shukla Trayodashi, 1350 CE — two days after Ashadhi Ekadashi). Namdev (1270-1350) was Mauli's contemporary and lifelong companion on pilgrimage. He is the only Warkari sant whose abhangas are preserved in the Sikh scripture — 61 hymns by 'Bhagat Naamdev' in the Guru Granth Sahib. His grace gives Vitthal-darshan as friend.

✦ Special Note

Namdev Punyatithi falls in the Ashadhi Wari window — the gathered Warkaris perform the punyatithi rituals at Namdev Pradakshina (the first step of the Vitthal Mandir). The same day is also Sant Janabai's punyatithi (his maid-disciple). Per the Marathi Drik Panchang (Amanta system) — Ashadh Shukla Trayodashi.
