Mantra

श्री शठकोपाय नमः · सहस्रशाखोपनिषद्भिरीडितम्

Sri Sathakopaya Namah · Sahasrashakhopanishadbhir-iditam

Salutations to Sri Sathakopa (Nammazhwar) — praised by the thousand-branched Upanishads — whose 1,102 pasurams of Tiruvaymozhi are the Tamil Sama Veda.

How to recite

At Alwar Tirunagari (Nammazhwar's birthplace, one of the 9 Nava-Tirupathi divya-desams), Sri Adinatha Perumal and Sri Nammazhwar are taken in joint procession. Recite the entire Tiruvaymozhi (1,102 pasurams in 100 decads — best done in groups across the day), Tiruviruttam, Tiruvasiriyam, and Periya Tiruvandadi (Nammazhwar's four works, totalling around 1,300 pasurams). At Srirangam, Tiruvaymozhi parayanam runs from dawn to dusk in the Sri Ranganatha sannidhi.

Benefits

Sri Nammazhwar (Maaran, Sathakopa, Parankusa) is held in the Sri Vaishnava sampradaya as the Sri Vaishnava Acharya-Vamsa progenitor — the human Acharya from whom the Guru-Parampara descends through Madhurakavi → Nathamuni → Yamunacharya → Ramanuja. He is recognised as the sahasra-shakha of the Tamil Veda — his Tiruvaymozhi is the Sama Veda in Tamil; his Tiruviruttam is the Rig; Tiruvasiriyam the Yajur; Periya Tiruvandadi the Atharva. Worship on Vaikasi Visakam (Tamil Vrishabha + Visakha nakshatra) confers his direct grace and the merit of Tiruvaymozhi parayanam for a year.
