Shravani Upakarma — observed on Shravana Purnima as the annual change of yagnopavit and the formal start of the year's Veda-paath. Arya Samaj observes it with morning havan, mass-yagnopavit-changing (open to all by conduct, not caste), and Veda-paath sammelan. Also coincides with Rakshabandhan.

Dates 2026–2027

August 28, 2026August 17, 2027

Mantra

ॐ यज्ञोपवीतं परमं पवित्रं प्रजापतेर्यत्सहजं पुरस्तात्

Om yajnopavitam paramam pavitram prajapater yat sahajam purastat

The yagnopavit is supremely pure — it was born together with Prajapati at the very beginning of creation. (Yajurveda — Yagnopavit-dharana mantra)

How to recite

Wake before dawn, snan in flowing water (a river or pond if possible), and a long morning havan. The old yagnopavit is removed, recycled into the havan fire, and a new one is donned with the Yagnopavit-dharana mantra. Read the four-Veda upakrama (the formal start of the year's Veda-paath). Many Arya Samaj mandirs hold a community Upakarma sammelan with combined Veda-paath, mass-yagnopavit-changing, and rakhi-tying as a separate Vedic samskara of family bonds.

Benefits

Shravana Purnima is the most important annual samskara day for the dvija (twice-born) — the yagnopavit is changed once a year on this day, and the formal year of Veda-paath begins (upa-kram = formal commencement). Maharshi Dayananda revolutionised the practice by teaching that yagnopavit-dharan is open to all human beings of pure conduct, not restricted by caste — and by reframing the day as primarily a Veda-paath samskara rather than a paternal ritual. Also coincides with Rakshabandhan, observed in Arya Samaj as a Vedic samskara of family protection.

✦ Special Note

Per Drik Panchang. Shravana Purnima 2026: August 28. Shravana Purnima 2027: August 17. Maharshi Dayananda's teaching that yagnopavit is open to all qualified by conduct (not by birth) is one of the panth's most important social reforms.
