Sri Snana Yatra — Jyestha Purnima — the public bathing of Sri Jagannatha, Sri Baladeva, and Subhadra Devi at Puri with 108 pots of water from the Suna Kua (Golden Well). After this bath, the deities enter anavasara (15-day seclusion) and are repainted with fresh colour by the daitas (the descendants of Lalita and Vishvavasu). They emerge for the public on Ratha Yatra day.

Mantra

Jagannatha Swami Nayana Pathagami Bhavatu Me — the iconic Jagannathastakam refrain

May Sri Jagannatha Swami be the constant object of my vision

How to recite

Bathe your home Jagannatha-Baladeva-Subhadra deities with 108 pots of fragrant water (or scaled-down panchamrita). Chant the Jagannathastakam (8 verses). Read the Sri Caitanya-caritamrita on Lord Caitanya's pastimes at Puri. After the bath, the deities go into anavasara (rest) for 15 days until Ratha Yatra.

Benefits

Snana Yatra commemorates the day Sri Jagannatha first manifested His form at Puri and was bathed by King Indradyumna. Jyestha Purnima. After the public bathing, Sri Jagannatha 'falls ill' (the deities are repainted in anavasara) and emerges on Ratha Yatra to journey to the Gundicha temple.

✦ Special Note

Per the Mayapur Vaishnava Calendar — date may shift by one day in non-Indian timezones. This festival is uniquely observed at Sri Jagannatha Puri and at every ISKCON temple with Jagannatha-Baladeva-Subhadra deities (which is the standard ISKCON deity-set per Srila Prabhupada's instruction). After today, the deities go into anavasara — no public darshan — until Ratha Yatra day.
