Ugadi — the Telugu and Kannada lunar new year, observed on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada with the symbolic six-taste Ugadi Pachadi, mango-leaf toranam, panchanga sravanam, and a festive vegetarian feast.
Dates 2026–2027
Mantra
ॐ ब्रह्मणे नमः । शुभं करोति कल्याणम् आरोग्यं धनसम्पदा ।
Om brahmane namah. Shubham karoti kalyanam arogyam dhana-sampada.
Salutations to Brahma. May this day bring auspiciousness, well-being, health and prosperity.
How to recite
Wake before sunrise, take an oil bath (abhyanga snanam), wear new clothes, decorate the doorway with mango-leaf toranam and rangoli. Prepare and offer Ugadi Pachadi to the deity at the home shrine. Listen to or read the Panchanga Sravanam (year's almanac forecast) at the local temple.
Benefits
Ugadi marks the beginning of the new lunar year (Chaitra Shukla Pratipada) for Telugus and Kannadigas. The six tastes of Ugadi Pachadi symbolise the six emotions one will encounter through the year — sweetness (joy), sourness (challenge), bitterness (sorrow), saltiness (zest), pungency (anger), astringency (surprise) — teaching equanimity. The day is considered the most auspicious for new beginnings, business openings, and hearing the year's panchanga forecast.
✦ Special Note
Per the Drik Panchang for Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Ugadi for Karnataka and Maharashtra (Gudi Padwa) falls on the same tithi but is observed with regional variations.
