Ulta Ratha (the 'reverse chariot') / Bahuda Yatra — Asadha Shukla Dasami — the return procession of Sri Jagannatha, Baladeva, and Subhadra from the Gundicha mandir back to the main temple at Puri. 9 days after Ratha Yatra. The same three chariots, the same crowds, the same ecstatic kirtans — but now homeward bound. Observed at all ISKCON temples with Jagannatha deities.
Dates 2026–2027
Mantra
जगन्नाथः स्वामी नयन पथगामी भवतु मे / Jagannatha Swami Nayana Pathagami Bhavatu Me
Jagannathastakam refrain
May Sri Jagannatha Swami be ever the object of my vision
How to recite
Attend the return Ratha Yatra at your local ISKCON temple. The same chariots and same kirtan procession — but now homeward. Read the Sri Caitanya-caritamrita description of Sri Caitanya's mood at Bahuda Yatra. Take mahaprasadam afterwards.
Benefits
Bahuda Yatra (the return chariot festival) on Asadha Shukla Dasami marks Sri Jagannatha's return from Gundicha back to His main temple at Puri. The 9-day stay at Gundicha is the Lord's vacation with His devotees; the return is the resumption of His regular darshan-lila at the Sri Mandir.
✦ Special Note
Per the Mayapur Vaishnava Calendar. The 9-day Gundicha-vasa (Sri Jagannatha's stay at Gundicha) is the Lord's annual vacation with His devotees. After Bahuda, Sri Jagannatha resumes His regular darshan at the main temple.
