Sri Vamana Avirbhava (Vamana Dvadasi) — Bhadra Shukla Dvadasi — the appearance day of Lord Vamana, the fifth of the Dashavatara. Born to Aditi and Kashyapa Muni as a tiny Brahmana boy who grew to encompass the entire universe in three steps. Especially beloved at Tirupati (where Sri Venkateswara is identified with Sri Vamana) and at Sri Trikkakkara (the original Vamana temple in Kerala — the source of Onam).

Mantra
नमामि नारायणपादपङ्कजम् / करोमि सर्वस्व-निवेदनं ते / Namami Narayana-padapankajam
Sri Vamana Pranama
I bow to the lotus feet of Lord Narayana — I offer everything I have to You
How to recite
Read the Srimad Bhagavatam Canto 8, Chapters 17-23 (the Vamana-avatara katha — Sri Vamana's appearance, His begging from Bali Maharaja, the three steps that measured the universe, and the granting of Patala to Bali). Offer brahmana-style prasadam — particularly sweet rice. Chant 16 rounds with extra meditation on Sri Vamana.
Benefits
Sri Vamanadeva is the fifth of the Dashavatara — the dwarf-Brahmana who appeared to remove the demon-king Bali Maharaja's pride while simultaneously fulfilling Bali's surrender. With three steps (Trivikrama-rupa) Vamana measured the entire universe; the third step landed on Bali's head — pushing him down to Patala but granting him the eternal blessing of being Sri Vamana's gatekeeper. One of the most beloved and intimate Vishnu pastimes.
✦ Special Note
Per the Mayapur Vaishnava Calendar. This is one day after Sri Radhastami (Bhadra Shukla Astami). The Vamana-avatara is the perfect example of the Lord's simultaneous mercy and might — punishment to Bali (loss of all kingdoms) became the highest blessing (eternal service as gatekeeper of Sri Vamana). Read Srimad Bhagavatam 8.17–23.
