Devotees stay awake all night performing puja of clay idols of Shiva-Parvati, listening to the Hartalika Katha. The fast must not be broken until the next morning after rituals are complete. This fast commemorates Parvati's intense tapas (penance) to win Shiva's love — tradition holds that Hartalika Teej once observed cannot be stopped.
