Holika Dahan Yajna — the Arya Samaj observance of Phalguna Purnima as a Vedic yajna of cleansing, using only dry wood, ghee and havan-samagri. The next-day Holi is observed as a quiet, satvik festival with phool-gulal only, no alcohol or bhang.

Dates 2026–2027

Mantra

ॐ अग्नये स्वाहा। इदमग्नये इदं न मम।

Om agnaye svaha, idam agnaye idam na mama

Svaha to Agni — this oblation is for Agni, this is not mine. (Standard Vedic ahuti — recited at every offering into the yajna fire)

How to recite

On Phalguna Purnima evening, perform a community Holika Dahan as a Vedic yajna — only dry wood, ghee, hawan-samagri, dry fruits and til-gud as offerings. Recite the Agni-suktas of the Rigveda and the Pavamana-mantras. The yajna is conceived as a cleansing of the year's accumulated impurities (mental, emotional, and environmental). The next morning observe a quiet, dry Holi with phool-gulal (flower colour) only — no chemical colours, no water-throwing, no rough behaviour.

Benefits

Maharshi Dayananda was deeply opposed to the wasteful and impure aspects of mainstream Holi — the burning of green trees, indecent songs, alcohol, bhang, throwing of mud and chemical colours, and the rough behaviour towards women. The Arya Samaj reframes Holika Dahan as a Vedic yajna using only sanctified materials, and the next-day Holi as a quiet, satvik festival of phool-gulal and family. The cleansing of the inner agni (digestive fire) and outer agni (yajna fire) together mark the renewal of the spring.

✦ Special Note

Per Drik Panchang. Phalguna Purnima / Holika Dahan 2026: March 3. Phalguna Purnima 2027: March 22. The Arya Samaj's no-bhang, no-chemical-colour, dry-wood-only Holi is one of the panth's most enduring environmental and ethical reforms — predating the modern eco-Holi movement by over a century.
