Maharshi Bodh Diwas — the Arya Samaj observance of Maha Shivaratri as the night of Maharshi Dayananda's spiritual awakening at Tankara in 1839, when the 14-year-old Mool Shankar saw a mouse on the Shivling and resolved to find the true God. Observed with phalahari fast, four-prahar Rudra-havan, and night-long jagran.

Mantra
ॐ त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम्। उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान्मृत्योर्मुक्षीय माऽमृतात्॥
Om tryambakam yajamahe sugandhim pushtivardhanam Urvarukam-iva bandhanan mrityor-mukshiya maamritat
We worship the three-eyed Lord (Rudra), fragrant and giver of nourishment — may He free us from death and grant immortality. (Rigveda 7.59.12 — the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra)
How to recite
Observe the full Maha Shivaratri vrat — phalahari fast and a night-long jagran. Perform four-prahar Rudra-havan with the Mahamrityunjaya mantra and selected Yajurveda Rudra-suktas (Yajurveda Chapter 16, the Shri Rudram). Read the famous account of the 14yo Mool Shankar's Shivratri awakening from 'Maharshi Dayananda Ka Atmacharita' (his own autobiographical fragment) and from Pandit Lekhram's Jeevan Charitra.
Benefits
On Maha Shivaratri night of 1839 CE at the Shiva mandir in Tankara (Gujarat), 14-year-old Mool Shankar was keeping the all-night vigil with his father. While the rest of the family slept, he watched a mouse climb on the Shivling and eat the prasad. The moment shattered his belief that the idol was the all-powerful living Shiva. He resolved that night to find the true God — a quest that took him through 25 years of wandering and 3 years of study under Virjananda, culminating in the founding of the Arya Samaj in 1875. For Arya Samaj, Maha Shivaratri is therefore Maharshi Bodh Diwas — the night of his spiritual awakening.
✦ Special Note
Per Drik Panchang. Maha Shivaratri 2026: February 15. Maha Shivaratri 2027: March 6. Arya Samaj observes the day with full Shivratri austerity but interprets it through the lens of Maharshi's awakening — the formless Vedic Rudra is worshipped through havan and Mahamrityunjaya, not through abhishekam of any murti or Shivling.
