Karadaiyan Nombu is a Tamil vrat observed by married women precisely at the moment the Tamil month transitions from Maasi to Panguni (the sun moves from Kumbha to Meena rashi). Observed for the health and longevity of the husband, it commemorates Savitri's devotion in rescuing her husband Satyavan from Yama. The fast is broken at the exact zodiac transition time — a moving window each year.

✦ Special Note

The timing of this vrat is unique — it is observed at the precise moment of the sun's transit (typically around midnight), not at sunrise or sunset. Prepare the karadai (mixed rice-lentil cakes) in advance and offer them to Goddess Savitri at the exact transition moment. Tie the nombu saradu (sacred thread) on the wrist after worship. Traditionally the whole family stays awake for the midnight observance.
