Hariyali Amavasya — Shravana Amavasya, the new moon at the height of the monsoon. For Bishnois, the year's most ecologically charged amavasya: collective tree-planting (Khejri, Rohira, Neem, Peepal, Banyan), strict amavasya fast, evening havan, and renewal of niyams #16 and #17 (tree protection). Many Bishnoi villages run vraksh-ropan drives planting hundreds of saplings.

Mantra
विष्णो विष्णो तू भजे रे प्राणी
Vishno Vishno tu bhaje re prani
O living being, chant Vishnu, chant Vishnu — Jambhoji's mool mantra, recited on Hariyali Amavasya (Bishnoi Tree-Planting Day).
How to recite
Hariyali Amavasya (Shravana Amavasya, the new moon at the height of the monsoon) is the year's most ecologically charged amavasya for Bishnois. Wake before dawn, bathe, perform sandhya, and gather the family or village for collective tree-planting. Plant Khejri, Rohira, Neem, Peepal, or Banyan saplings on family land, village commons, or cremation grounds — water each with tulsi-water and chant 'Vishno Vishno tu bhaje re prani' over each sapling. Observe the standard amavasya fast (no grains until sunset), perform havan with dry deadfall in the evening, and break the fast with bajra khichdi. Many Bishnoi villages organize collective Hariyali Amavasya tree-drives — hundreds of saplings planted in one day.
Benefits
Hariyali means 'greenery' — Hariyali Amavasya is the day the desert greens up after the monsoon rains, and the day Bishnois renew their living covenant with the trees. The Khejarli sacrifice of 1730 (Amrita Devi and 363 martyrs protecting Khejri trees) gave Bishnois a unique authority on tree-protection in India; Hariyali Amavasya is the day that authority is lived out in action. The 29 niyams' tree-protection rules (#16, #17) find their most active expression on this day.
✦ Special Note
Per Drik Panchang. Hariyali Amavasya 2026: August 12 (Shravana Amavasya). Hariyali Amavasya 2027: August 2. The Bishnoi tree-protection focus on this day is rooted in the 1730 Khejarli sacrifice. Dates per Drik Panchang (drikpanchang.com, Rajasthan/Marwar Purnimanta reckoning); community observance details per the Akhil Bharatiya Bishnoi Mahasabha and Mukam (Muktidham Mukam) Mandir Sansthan calendars.
